Case study: an IoT security FDP for 50 faculty at CUSAT

  • ~50faculty from across India
  • 3 daysfaculty development programme
  • AICTE ATALsponsored
  • Securitysessions led by Edwhere

The brief

The faculty development programme (FDP), held at the Department of Computer Applications, CUSAT, and sponsored by the AICTE Training and Learning (ATAL) Academy, was a three-day programme on the Internet of Things. Around 50 faculty members took part, from engineering and computer science colleges all over India.

IoT is everywhere now, from smart homes to factory floors, but security is often an afterthought. Edwhere was invited to deliver the security sessions of the programme, so that faculty could take a practical understanding of IoT security back to their own classrooms.

What we covered

From threats to defences

  1. ThreatsThe main IoT vulnerabilities
  2. HardwareDevice-level security
  3. FrameworksOWASP IoT Top 10, MITRE ATT&CK
  4. DefencesChecklists and standards
  • The main vulnerabilities in IoT systems, and how attackers exploit them, with live demonstrations of real exploits.
  • Hardware-related security: risks that live in the device itself, not just the network.
  • The OWASP IoT Top 10, the industry's list of the most critical IoT security threats.
  • MITRE ATT&CK, including the matrix for industrial control systems, and how to use it to understand attacker behaviour.
  • JPCERT IoT security checklists and guidance from the NIST SP 800 series.
  • Cybersecurity standards that apply when designing and deploying IoT systems.

The result

Feedback from the participants was very good. What they valued most was that complex topics were explained in very simple language, so faculty from many different backgrounds came away with a real understanding of IoT security, not just a list of terms. That's how we teach in every programme, whether for students or for teachers.
